Early Mama vs. Young Mama

I see a lot of consistent questions and comments here, so I thought I'd take the time to mass-respond to a biggie:

"I don't know if I'm an Early Mama, but..."

The reason I went with "early" instead of "young" is because it has fewer connotations than YOUNG MOM or YOUNG WIFE. Put "young" in front, and we start surmising about maturity, education, preparedness, etc. And it also inherently carries the weight of teen mom.

And while some of you are or were teen moms, Early Mama is also for the 20-something woman who is settling down into these grown-up roles a little earlier than expected. (See? EARLIER!)  So here's a little cheat sheet, in case you're wondering if you belong here. (Which, stop it. You totally belong here.)

Were you one of the first of your friends/peers to get married/have a baby?

Then you're an Early Mama!

Did you become a mom/wife earlier than you expected?

Then you're an Early Mama!

Did you become a mom/wife earlier than your friends and family expected? And were they pretty vocal about that?

Then you're an EarlyMama!

Did you become a mom/wife earlier than your community labels as "the norm"?

Then you're an Early Mama!

Did you become a mom/wife at a younger age than society portrays on TV/movies/advertisements?

Then you're an Early Mama!

Did you think you were ready to become a mom/wife, but then everyone came out of the woodworks to tell you that you're wrong?

Then you're an Early Mama!

Are you a 20-something balancing young adulthood with new grown-up roles?

...you get it.

Maybe you said "yes" to all of those questions, maybe it was only one or two. That's the thing about being an Early Mama — it depends on your own experience. Maybe you're 19, maybe you're 23, maybe you're 27. The label of "young mom" is different depending on where you live and what arbitrary age cut-off you go by. Are you a young mom at 25? At 27?

I don't know, but you're most likely an Early Mama.

And I'm so glad that you're here. We've been looking for more voices to join us, so welcome. xo
