Reasons to be Grateful

If you're familiar with my site, you know that I became a mom earlier than I expected to. Earlier than anyone expected me to. I was (am) an ambitious go-getter of a young woman, my eyes set on the top, and I was under the impression that becoming a mother would stall my life — professionally, personally, romantically. How could I pursue my professional goals? How can I continue to develop as an adult without those all-important "finding yourself" years all to myself? And would my young relationship survive this curve ball?

As it turns out, I can and it will.

Not only that, but my life has reached professional and personal heights that I never imagined in my pre-mom life. The best thing that ever happened to me was becoming a mother.

I'm a better person because of it.

Here are 10 (of the many) reasons I'm personally grateful to be a mom:

1. It gave me a purpose.

There's no better reason to become the person you've always wanted to be than those two little eyes watching your every move, absorbing your words and actions as their normal.

2. I can see life through a brand new perspective.

Children have a way of making life seem as simple as it really is. It's easy to get caught up in the little annoyances that can feel so big to an adult — but life doesn't have to be that complicated. And I'll always be grateful to remember what things look like and feel like from the perspective of a newcomer.

3. I have a new respect and understanding for my body.

For the very first time since I was a pre-body-conscious child, I listened to my body during pregnancy. And then after I saw the way my body morphed and primitively took control — after I saw its tremendous physical capabilities and resilience during labor — I finally, FINALLY, respected it. I'm grateful for the new relationship I have with my body.

4. I have refocused goals and refueled ambition.

There's something about becoming a mother that makes you reevaluate what's really important in life, and it can even encourage women to do more with their lives — to be more creative or more helpful. I'm grateful for this perspective.

Have a happy Thanksgiving, friends — and I hope you feel as grateful as I do.
